Description
I found this Trout Lily growing on the forest floor on my property. I especially like the way the leaves beneath the flower appeared to be circling the flower. The Trout Lily reaches a height between 5-10 inches (12.4-25 cm). Each stalk produces a single hanging yellow flower that is about 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide. It has 3 curving petals and 3 petal-like sepals. It has a pair of elliptical, pointed basal leaves which are up to 8-inches long (20 cm), with brownish purple spots and streaks, giving it a mottled look similar to the Brown Trout, a common fish in our streams.
